Holiday Safety Reminders
From the desk of SIFD’s Fire Chief Chris Lake
The holiday season is a time of joy, family, and celebration. As we decorate our homes and prepare for gatherings, let’s also take a few extra steps to keep ourselves and our community safe. Winter weather and festive traditions can bring risks, but with preparation and awareness, we can enjoy the holidays with peace of mind.
Christmas Tree & Decoration Safety
Keep live trees well-watered to reduce fire risk.
Place trees away from heating devices and registers to prevent them from drying out too quickly.
Never place open flames or candles near trees or decorations.
Inspect lights and electrical cords for wear before use, and avoid overloading outlets.
Power & Emergency Preparedness
Be ready for power outages during winter storms.
Keep generators fueled and tested so they’re ready when needed.
Stock up on enough food and water for one to two weeks in case extreme weather makes travel difficult.
Have flashlights, batteries, and blankets accessible for comfort and safety.
Winter Weather Safety
If conditions are snowy or icy, try to stay indoors whenever possible.
Minimize the risk of falls by avoiding unnecessary trips outside.
If you must go out, wear sturdy footwear with good traction and walk slowly and carefully.
Keep walkways clear of ice and snow, and use sand or salt to reduce slipping hazards.
By taking these precautions, we protect not only ourselves but also our neighbors. A safe community is a strong community, and together we can ensure that Sauvie Island remains a warm and welcoming place throughout the season.
Wishing You Joy From our island family to yours—be safe, stay prepared, and have a very Happy Holidays!
